Biochar Research & Developent

The USDA NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG)

Kipuka LM was awarded a CIG grant to convert the woody debris generated during reforestation into biochar to potentially enhance reforestation and agricultural practices in the State.

Kipuka LM is in the process of collaborating with soil scientists from U.H. (University of Hawaii) to test each type of wood for its unique properties which may make them a useful soil amendment to enhance the health of forests and tropical soil types throughout the State.

This research project is using some of the forest management sites as test sites for biochar application. Biochar is known to have beneficial properties; soil will be tested to see how the different types of biochar interact with plant growth.
